Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play Pictionary?

One player draws a word while their team guesses. You may not write letters or numbers, speak, or use gestures — only the drawing. The team has 60 seconds to guess as many words as they can before play passes on.

How many Pictionary words does this generator have?

Over 570, across eight categories and three difficulty levels. Every word was filtered on one question: can someone draw this in 60 seconds and have others recognise it? Emotions, verbs and movie titles were left out for that reason.

Does the Pictionary generator have a timer?

Yes. A 60-second countdown starts with the first word. When it expires, the round score is saved and the next team takes over.

Do I need the Pictionary board game to play?

No. All you need is paper, something to draw with, and this word generator. The board and the cards are optional — most people play the sketch-and-guess game on its own.

What makes a word hard to draw?

Ambiguity, not obscurity. "Cactus" is easy because nothing else looks like it. "Solar eclipse" is hard because a circle over a circle could be almost anything until you add context. Our Hard tier is built from scenes and visually ambiguous subjects.

More About Pictionary

Rules people forget

No letters and no numbers is the rule everyone breaks first — writing "BBQ" next to a grill is not drawing. The second is no gestures: pointing at your sketch, nodding, or miming turns the game into charades. The third is that the drawer may not speak at all, including "yes" and "no". Enforce all three and the 60 seconds start to feel very short.

How to draw well under a timer

Draw the silhouette before the detail. A guessable lighthouse is a tall tapered box with a light on top, drawn in eight seconds; a beautiful lighthouse is unguessable at second fifty. Start with the thing's most recognisable outline, then add exactly one identifying detail — the stripes, the beam, the rocks.

Why our word list has no emotions or verbs

Almost every Pictionary list online is a recycled random-word list, which is why they include "jealous" and "running". Those are charades words — you perform them. A drawing needs a subject with a shape. Every word here passed that filter, which is also why it shares almost nothing with our charades generator. Different game, different list.

Playing with kids

Set the category to Kids and the difficulty to Easy, then relax the timer. Young children draw slowly and narrate constantly, and enforcing silence is what ends the game early. A good variation: let the child draw and the adults guess, then swap — being the one who knows the answer is most of the fun at that age. Our games for kids page has more in this vein.
