How to Play the Dare Wheel Game

Sit in a circle, agree that anyone can pass, then take turns spinning the wheel and performing the dare it lands on. A player who refuses takes a small penalty instead, and the turn moves clockwise.

1. Sit in a circle and agree the rules. Before the first spin, say out loud that anyone can pass on any dare, and that nothing illegal, dangerous or destructive belongs on the wheel. Ten seconds now prevents every argument later.
2. Choose a difficulty level. Easy suits families and mixed ages, medium suits friends, hard is for teens and adults who know each other well.
3. Decide who spins first. Next birthday, youngest player, or a volunteer. After that, play runs clockwise so nobody gets skipped or targeted.
4. Spin the wheel and read the dare aloud. The whole group needs to hear it — that's what makes a dare a dare. Once you accept it, you see it through.
5. Perform the dare, or pass and take the penalty. A penalty is a small speed bump, not a punishment: an easier mini-dare, a truth question, ten jumping jacks.
6. Pass the turn clockwise and spin again. Most games run 30 to 60 minutes before the energy drops — stop while everyone still wants one more round.

The rules that keep it fun

• Anyone can pass, any time. This is the rule the whole game rests on. If your penalty is so harsh that nobody dares use the pass, you have quietly deleted it.
• Nothing illegal, dangerous or destructive. A dare should take social courage, not physical stupidity.
• No take-backsies. Hear the dare, accept the dare, do the dare.
• Don't punch down. Don't aim the shyest person in the room at the boldest dare on the wheel. Let people warm up.
• What happens in the game stays in the game. No posting anything without the person's say-so.
